If You Don’t Track Product Returns Individually, You’re Not Ready

If you’re considering launching recommerce, one of the most important things to review is your product return process.

Ask yourself:

  • What systems are involved in the return flow?
  • What data is left behind once an item is returned?
  • Do you have any traceability per item, or is everything grouped under a bulk SKU?

A strong recommerce model starts with identified supply. That means every returned item should be serialized, condition-graded, and logged with the right details—ideally even with product-specific images.

If you can bridge the final gap between refund and item-level traceability, you create a foundation that supports resale, rental, refurbishment, or anything else that follows.
